Event sponsors pose with the finalists.

DigiThinkIT Inc. was a proud sponsor of the just concluded annual The Joust Business Plan Competition, organized by the College of Business Administration at the University of Central Florida. The entrepreneurial event, held every year, was organized this year by UFC in collaboration with Blackstone LaunchPad and the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at UCF.

Our mission is to foster the education and development of young entrepreneurs by providing an immersive experiential program that includes mentoring, pitching and feedback. By giving entrepreneurial students the chance to compete, we are helping to equip them with experiences, skills, and potentially the start-up funding that will help them pursue their dream of running their own company.

Contestants in the annual event enter business plans with the intention of winning the approval of various judging panels throughout the event and making it to the finals and a jackpot prize of $75,000 in cash and in-kind prizes. As one of the presenting sponsors for The Joust, DigiThinkIT, Inc. CEO and founder, Eric B. Delisle had the honor of being one of the judges during the semi-finals held on the 20th of March.

Some of the key things judges look out for from participants are their capacity to take risks, engage their target market, make data-driven decisions while engendering cross-disciplinary collaboration among their team mates and other teams.

Some of the main things we were looking for as judges were passion, attention to business principles and viability of the business plan. As part of the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Central Florida, we at DigiThinkIT believe in and support such events as we see them as an important conduit to the deepening of capacity in young entrepreneurs to help them weather the inevitable challenges they will face later on in their entrepreneurial ventures.

During the finals held at the FAIRWINDS Alumni Center and witnessed by an audience of more than 160, four teams battled it out for the number one position in a scenario reminiscent of the hit TV show Shark Tank.

The judging panel, which included Jeffrey Adler of Silver Fox Capital Group, LLC, Andrew Fore, III of Alvarez & Marsal, Julie Gaines of LSQ Funding, and Jonathan A. Kennedy of Natus listened to each team pitch and had an opportunity to ask them some few pointed questions, which needless to say, played an important part in each team’s overall score.

Looking for those key ingredients that make a winning pitch, the judges picked Quarterwear, a company that designs and sells t-shirts while giving 25 percent of its profits to non-profit organizations and run by Oluwafunlola Falade for first place.

Second, third and fourth places were taken up by Craig Bolz, Jeffrey Nadel, Geoff Castillo, and Nicholas Bowers with DrinkDrivers, a business that provides alcohol delivery services; Leif Bang, Joe Hadley, Aaron Blades, Jordan Kummer and Artus Nemati for Proof Protector, a company producing a protective pour spout for liquor; and Caroline Castille and Odie Calderin with Bsteps, a company that produces dance shoes, respectively.

Other sponsors for the event included Steve FelkowitzCoLabNperspective-CFO ServicesGeneral Counsel Advisors, P.A.DG3 Media Group, and Stage One Screening Solutions.
